In the realm of visual artistry, I, Caique Cunha, wield photography as the primary conduit for my creative expression. Inspired by the groundbreaking works of Duane Michals, Richard Sandler, and Robert Frank, my artistic journey is a bold exploration of the intricate tapestry of political and social landscapes that define our society. However, my approach is unique; I am a storyteller, weaving invented narratives through the frames I capture.
Like Michals, I embrace the narrative potential of photography, using it as a tool to construct alternative realities and challenge the status quo. Through a series of carefully crafted frames, I create invented stories that serve as a mirror to society, reflecting its complexities and contradictions with both clarity and ambiguity.
Sandler’s candid approach to street photography resonates deeply with me, inspiring me to venture into the heart of urban landscapes to capture the raw essence of everyday life. As said in the nineteenth century by the Brazilian writer, João do Rio, in his book The Enchanting Soul of The Streets… “the streets are full of sweat in the mortar of it’s pavement”. But instead of trying to document reality (reality is a very subjective topic), I use my lens to reimagine it, infusing each frame with layers of meaning and interpretation.
In the spirit of Robert Frank, I confront the prevailing norms and structures that govern our world, using my invented stories to provoke thought and inspire action. Each photograph is a window into a parallel universe, inviting viewers to question their assumptions and explore new perspectives on the world around them.
Besides that, drawing upon the rich tradition of Brazilian modern art, I infuse my work with its essential elements and characteristics, giving depth and substance to my creations. From the bold colors and dynamic forms to the rhythmic movements and abstract compositions, my photography is a fusion of modernist aesthetics and contemporary vision.
Ultimately, my work as a visual artist is a testament to the power of imagination and creativity in shaping our understanding of society. By marrying the innovative techniques of my influences with the distinct aesthetic of Brazilian modern art, I strive to create imagery that transcends the boundaries of reality, inviting viewers to journey into the realm of the imagination and explore the limitless possibilities of visual storytelling.
About Caique Cunha
Caique Cunha is a Brazilian visual artist who harnesses the medium of photography to delve into realms of self-expression and introspection. His body of work navigates the intricate tapestry of political narratives and everyday life, offering a contemporary lens through which to view the world.
Cunha’s artistic journey has been enriched by his continuous education at prestigious institutions such as the International Center of Photography and the School of Visual Arts, both in New York City, as well as Casa Foto e Arte in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His commitment to artistic excellence has been recognized through invitations to serve as a judge and jury member for prominent Brazilian art exhibitions.
In addition to his creative pursuits, Cunha has contributed his talents to significant events such as the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games, where he served as Photo Manager for the Boxing and Sitting Volleyball venues.
Currently, Cunha takes on the role of Cultural Manager at Studio Rico, an art production company and art gallery situated in the vibrant cultural landscape of Rio de Janeiro. Through his multifaceted efforts as an artist, educator, and curator, Cunha continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression, leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene.
